On January 20, 2022 the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held the Digital Human Rights Conference, setting a precedent for promoting and discussing issues on human rights in the digital era. The NHRC also expressed its collective hope for the implementation of human rights concepts in digital technologies and making this a vital element of competitiveness in digital development.
In her remarks, Chairperson Chen said, “Digital technology is evolving at an amazing speed after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this has also contributed to the creation of a great amount of online content which is not only troublesome, but also intrudes on human rights. As the digital market and social media make rapid advances, so too does their tremendous impact on information security and personal data privacy, which are the very focuses of digital human rights.”
Chen also said, “Areas with low levels of digital development can fail to interface with social resources and functions, resulting in challenges to digital human rights. Attention must be given to digital human rights issues and our collective wisdom must be pooled, so that Taiwan will not fall behind and will be able to keep pace with global trends.”
